When was the last time I posted something here? I think it was back in January after I saw The Death Cure, which is about two months ago! I haven’t been able to find some free time when my brain can function well enough to produce a piece of writing lately. There have been so much work to do and I also had a university entrance test to get through (I’m hoping I can go back to school and get my master’s degree. Wish me luck!), So I’ve been quite overwhelmed these days. But I miss writing so much. I have to try to write more. So I’ve had this blog for a while now but I just realized that I have zero entry for my Books page. I feel a bit guilty about that. So, here is my first blog post about books! I went to the annual book bazaar, Big Bad Wolf Jakarta, last Friday and bought some new books. The event started on Thursday, March 29, and I went there on the second day, which was the beginning of a long weekend. I didn’t have to queue for a long time before entering the venue and doing the payment, but the hall was pretty crowded. Unlike last year, I didn’t get to buy many books this year. I couldn’t find any book from my book shopping list there and ended up buying two books that I just accidentally found. It seemed like they have more children books to offer this time. I guess I’m just not so lucky. However, I’m pretty excited to read the two books that I bought, which are: ARRIVAL AKA STORIES OF YOUR LIFE AND OTHERS BY TED CHIANG I think the cover of this book is a bit misleading because it makes you think that it’s the novelization of the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated movie Arrival, while, in fact, it isn’t. It’s actually a collection of short stories created by Ted Chiang, previously published as Stories of Your Life and Others. There are eight short stories in it including Story of Your Life, which is the one that inspires the movie Arrival. Since Arrival is one of my favorite films, I decided to buy the book and I’m pretty sure the stories are just as interesting as the film. The price of the book is only Rp. 65.000,-. STARTER FOR TEN BY DAVID NICHOLLS Starter for Ten is a novel written by David Nicholls (aka the author of One Day). Although I couldn’t make myself finish reading One Day (I don’t know why…), I really like Nicholls’s writing style. The synopsis that is written on the back cover tells me that the story is about “love, class, growing up and the all-important difference between knowledge and wisdom”, which sounds like my kind of story. Another thing that gets me interested is the fact that this book has been adapted into a film starring some of my favorite actors: James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Dominic Cooper. Yup, all three of them. This book also costs Rp. 65.000,-
To end this post, here are some photos that my friend, Rizki, and I took when we were hunting for books together. As you can see behind us, there were some pretty cool movie posters and some kind of disks displayed in the venue. I think you can buy those things too if you want because I saw price tags around them. They were arranged quite nicely so we thought we must take some photos in front of them haha.
